Nonprofits and Lobbying: What do I Need to Know About C4 Organizations?

July 10, 2019 | 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

$20

Community groups are recognizing the power of advocacy, lobbying and political campaigning.   Many nonprofits are doing more to move the needle to change the laws and systems to work better for their communities.  Nonprofits with 501c3 tax-exempt status can do some advocacy and lobbying, but are limited by the laws that govern their 501c3 tax-exempt status.  Creating a 501c4 organization that has broader ability to do lobbying and political activity is one way community groups are able to achieve their social change goals. Join us to learn more about what can 501c3 and 501c4s can do in this area and how a 501c4 works.

We will address:

  • if starting a 501c4 is right for your organization.
  • Benefits of starting a 501c4 and what you can and cannot do
  • The differences between a 501c3 and 501c4 organization.
  • Operational models for having both a 501c3 and 501c4
