We are excited to announce a new resource for our volunteer attorneys! We have developed a course to introduce more attorneys to the world of advising nonprofits and community-based organizations.
The course is called the Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Law. Attorneys who complete the course are eligible for 1.5 CLE credits (Law & Legal). The course also includes a downloadable sample Form 1023 Application for 501(c)(3) Status from a real organization. The course is presented by the esteemed Judy Andrews, who has over 25 years of experience advising nonprofit organizations and has previously taught nonprofit law at Seattle University School of Law as an adjunct professor.
Unlike many of our resources, which are made accessible for both nonprofit leaders and attorneys, Nuts & Bolts is designed primarily with attorneys in mind. Because many nonprofits struggle to afford legal help, there aren’t as many law firms or attorneys in Washington State who specialize in nonprofit law. This systemic issue results in a dynamic that often feels like there are more nonprofits seeking pro bono legal help from Communities Rise than there exist attorneys who have the expertise to help these clients.
This course is part of our ongoing efforts to alleviate this systemic issue, by enabling more of our volunteer attorneys to expand their areas of expertise to include nonprofit law. In the coming weeks, we will be revealing more projects and opportunities related to helping more attorneys become experts in nonprofit law.
